Fried Green Tomatoes

We picked up some green tomatoes at the farmer’s market in Bixby a few days ago just to make this dish. I’m too stingy with the tomatoes on my plants to pick any of them while they’re still green!

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 cup flour

1 egg, beaten

1/4 cup milk

1 cup seasoned bread crumbs

3 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

4-6 medium green tomatoes, sliced thick.

1. Combine sugar and flour in a shallow dish. Mix egg and milk in a bowl, and place bread crumbs in a shallow dish.

2. Melt butter in a large nonstick skillet; add oil. Dip tomato slices in sugar/flour mixture, then egg/milk, then bread crumbs. Fry until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels.

  1. I picked up some green tomatoes at the farmers’ market this morning. This recipe looks really good. I’m going to try it. Thanks for posting!

    • Hope you like it, Todd. The brown sugar adds a nice hint of sweetness to it that makes this my favorite recipe for green tomatoes.

  2. I LOVE Fried Green Tomatoes, but never can find any. Of course, I only shop in grocery stores. Maybe that’s the problem.

    • I buy them at Conrad’s in Bixby, though I’ve seen them at farmers’ markets before. They’re well worth the drive to Bixby before or after work, since you’re in south Tulsa anyway. 🙂
